Introduction to RTDAS under NHP
Introduction to Real Time Data Acquisition System (RTDAS) for all basins in Maharashtra State under National Hydrology Project (NHP)
The World Bank-supported Hydrology Project Phase I and Phase II had supported the establishment of a Hydrological Information Systems in Maharashtra State. The World Bank-funded National Hydrology Project (NHP) seeks to build upon that. The NHP aims to improve and expand the water resources monitoring systems, strengthen water resources operation and planning systems by modernising monitoring, including the establishment of comprehensive, nationwide, automated, Real Time monitoring networks and data management systems for surface water under NHP component ‘B’ of ‘Water Resource Information System’.
- The geographical location of Maharashtra is bounded between latitude 16.4o to 22.1o N and longitude 72.6o to 80.9o E. The geographical area of Maharashtra state is 307.71 Thousands Km2 which is @ 9.4% of the total geographical area of India.
- Major river basins in the state are the Krishna river with its major tributary as Bhima, Godavari, Tapi, West flowing rivers of Konkan strip and small portion of Narmada river on north. The Krishna, Godavari, Tapi and Narmada basins do not wholly lie in Maharashtra but territory of Maharashtra is formed of the regions of their sub-basins.
- Maharashtra State Water Policy (July, 2003) envisages that the water resources of the state shall be planned, developed and managed via a multi-sector approach at the river basin and sub basin scale.
- The policy states that the distress in water availability during deficit period shall be shared equitably amongst the different sectors of water use and also amongst upstream and downstream users.
- The rainfall in each basin varies with respect to space and time to great extent.
- Real Time Hydro-Met data acquisition network is implemented under this project. It will provide key data required for forecasting Inflows into the Basin and other related activities.
- A Real Time Data Acquisition System (RTDAS) is consists of a telemetry network of automated rainfall stations, automated weather station and water levels stations along rivers/reservoirs which will be installed to provide inputs to the RTDAS.
- The concept of implementation on which the present technical specifications and special conditions are based intends to combine the advantages of modern Data Loggers, data storage, processing and data communication technologies with the requirements of high availability and sustainability required by such an important project.
- The real-time data acquisition system networks have the greatest possible reliability, thus minimizing the maintenance to the extent possible.
Scope of Project
- Complete supply, installation, testing, commissioning of remote stations including civil works, sensors, data logger, software, hardware and ancillary equipment, solar panel, mounting poles, masts, cables and tethers, electrical and network cabling, lightening arrestors etc. complete,.
- Technical design, supply, installation, testing, commissioning of the real time hydrologic data collection network and establish data communications using INSAT between the remote stations and the Earth Receiving Station at New Delhi / Jaipur /Burla and GSM / GPRS between remote station to the dedicated computer provided at Data Center Nashik or at e-SWIS / WIMS server.
- Establish a VSAT Receiving Station to collect DCP data of state RTDAS center at Nashik, Maharashtra which should be compatible with the existing VSAT system at ERS, New Delhi / Jaipur / Burla.
- Establish a GSM & GPRS receiving system along with all required data transmission arrangement at State Data Centre-SDC Nashik to collect GSM &GPRS data. This shall include a Server 95 computer that will support the reception of the GSM & GPRS Data stream.
- Providing necessary facility to generate daily report of RTDAS data at specified time and in the specified format as prescribed by WRD Govt. of Maharashtra.
Working of the System
- Data from all Stations are received at existing earth station at Delhi/Jaipur/Burla.
- This data is routed to State Data Centre, Nashik through existing software at earth station.
- State data centre at Nashik receives and store all this data in server.
- Application software encodes all this data and presents in prescribed format on desktop.
- Application software has facility to view historical data.
- It has also facility to export data in prescribed format for third party application.
